Why is it called The Adventure Habit?

Mar 08, 2024

I love reading the story of Peter Pan  at least once every year. My favorite line is when the narrator says "To live would be an awfully big adventure." Peter is chided for refusing to grow up, and the rest of us are encouraged to fully embrace life as an adventure.

You might wonder why our community is called "The Adventure Habit."

The name shows our main belief: Living a full, meaningful life means seeing all of life as an adventure. And a life of adventure is really an umbrella Habit, made up of many small habits across all areas of our lives.

When we hear "adventure" we think of exciting exploits like exploring unknown places. But real adventure is bringing curiosity, awareness and energy to ordinary parts of life too. It's seeing connections between all areas of our lives rather than keeping them separate.

An "adventurous life" is one where work, health, relationships, hobbies and rest all affect each other deeply. It means personal growth even when things get messy.

A Better World-Step 4: Act

Jul 15, 2020

Many of us have a healthy bias toward getting into action. Overused, though can cause more harm than good. (See the book When Helping Hurts). This is why we save Act for step 4. Action must be informed by understanding the complex dynamics and concern for many varied stakeholders.

Aligning with great people will make our actions more informed by the best practices and understanding of the issues.

And having allocated time, money, and resources will help you have the stamina to act when results don't come quickly.

Act freely and humbly. This will help you create A Better World.

A Better World-Step 2: Align

Jul 01, 2020

Align yourself with great people. When you want to change the world, you will need a team. The best way I have found is to align yourself with great people who are already doing the work. Find an association, foundation, not-for-profit, or agency that is already working in the area that you care about.
Are you concerned about housing disparity? Serve on the citizen's advisory board for your city's housing or development committee.
Would you like to see greater racial justice? Attend a march, listen to the speakers, give money to an advocacy organization.
Care about conservation and the environment? Pay the dues to join a not-for-profit, read their publications, make a donation.
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” -Margaret Mead
